Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This
Whenever a significant awards ceremony draws close, one notices a clamor for introducing fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely that year
- A different innovative game missed out in 2019
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
